Of Mirrors and Millionaires

We examined in the last article the great decline in our nation of the virtue of sustaining hard physical labor.  So it may greatly surprise you when I ask the following question: How would you like to become an instant billionaire, never to have to work again?
To achieve that goal, all you need to do is double the efficiency of the photo voltaic cell.  The average commercial photo voltaic cell is only about 15% efficient.  That means that 85% of the light that strikes a solar panel goes unused.
You could then patent your improvement, and sit back and watch your bank account bulge.  Or, you could make the wise decision to funnel all your profits into some benefit for the human race.  Whether you would choose to bring misery upon yourself by hording your fortune, or bring blessings upon your head by sharing it is not the scope of this article.  I leave that to you, let’s look at an interesting new solar device.
With about 150 square feet of mirrors focusing their light upon one common point, tinkerers in Washington State are able to to instantly convert water to steam in a black painted coil 12’ from the mirrors.  Or, to prove their point, they stuck a board near the focal point-- it instantly started smoking.
Of course, they have patented their design, and plan to try and commercialize it.  But the interesting point is that anyone could build one.  All you need to do is focus the mirrors at a common point, in the same way that satellite dishes work.
‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ they say.  As long as we can get a property with free natural gas included, we will probably not try any experiments with the mirrors off our wife’s chest of drawers.  But the folks who tinker around are the ones who come up with contraptions that work.  Sure, they may have a scrap pile out back where all their failures are piled up, but one day -bingo- it works!
Only about 15 years ago, it actually took more energy to make a solar cell than what that cell would produce in its lifetime.  To help you grasp that, think in these terms for an example: a solar panel that would eventually make 5 kilowatts of power would maybe take 6 kilowatts of power to produce it.
Obviously, the only folks who would be drawn to a solar panel are those like myself who live off-grid, Amish, or alternative-energy freaks.
But someone is “tinkering”.  At present, 42.8% is the best efficiency that a laboratory can produce for silicone based photo-voltaic cells, and the average cell that the consumer buys is now a net energy producer in many cases.
So be of good cheer.  The rising cost of petroleum may just cause someone to take the mirrors off of the medicine cabinet and become a billionaire!

I exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.  Jude 1:3

Judas 1:3
